Sometimes your first love won’t let you go…

When Lou Wandsworth ran away to France with her teacher Mike Hughes, she thought he was the love of her life. But Mike wasn’t what he seemed and he left her life in pieces.

Now 32, Lou discovers that he is involved with teenager Chloe Meadows. Determined to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself, she returns home to confront him for the damage he’s caused.

But Mike is a predator of the worst kind, and as Lou tries to bring him to justice, it’s clear that she could once again become his prey…

My Thoughts.

Favourite character/narrator: Lou!

What I liked/overall standout elements:

  • The author’s choice of narrative method is really effective. The novel is narrated from the perspectives of Lou, Wendy and Chloe, using a mix of both the first-person and the third-person. The narrative is complex, but is still very easy to follow.
  • The characterisation of Lou is brilliant. She’s a very complex character – she’s tough and determined to do what’s right, but she’s also very emotional and vulnerable. She’s deeply scarred from the horrors of her past, and has suffered greatly. I felt a great deal of sympathy towards her.
  • The exploration of childhood trauma, particularly child grooming and paedophilia, is very effective. Taylor addresses some difficult issues, such as battery and rape, but these are explored very sensitively and in enough detail.
  • There are many Crime/Thriller elements incorporated in this novel, such as increasing suspensemystery regarding what will happen next, plenty of twists and turns, and a fantastic ending.
  • The novel ends fantastically. There’s a dramatic end scene that is jam-packed full of action and drama. The characters’ must work together to overpower the villain Mike, before it’s too late. I was really satisfied with the way the novel ended, and felt that it tied everything together very well.

Happy reading 🙂
